Police vows to deal with mob justice perpetrators

A call has gone out to the citizenry to desist from taking the law into their own hands in dealing with suspects on various criminalities.

The plea by the Malawi Police Service follows the arrest of two men in Lilongwe on suspicion that they were amongst the mob, in two separate incidences, which killed two suspected robbers.

According Lilongwe Police Station Deputy Spokesperson Sergeant Foster Benjamin, it is unfortunate that some people are opting for mob justice when dealing with suspected criminals.

“In the first incident, the law enforcers arrested 33-year old Zonse Landini for allegedly killing 37-year old Sikalioti Mandiza last Wednesday. Mandiza was allegedly caught while attempting to steal from a house of one of the villagers.

“In the second case, police also netted Palasido Folomani for allegedly killing another villager. The villager was allegedly trying to steal when he was apprehended and killed by an angry mob,” said Benjamin.

He has since cautioned that the law will take its course against any perpetrator.

Benjamin said: “We are strongly warning members of the community against killing crime suspects and that the law will take its course on those involved.”

The suspects were arrested Saturday, July 17, 2021 in Traditional Authorities (T Malili and Mazengera where they allegedly committed the crime.

Meanwhile, the two suspects have been charged with murder.

Police officers are still on the ground to arrest more suspects linked to these two murder incidences.
