Met cautions lake users as Mwera Winds make landfall

A warning has gone out to all lake users to exercise caution as the country`s water bodies are expected to be hit by Mwera Winds.

According to the Department of Climate Change and Meteorological Services, from July 23, 2021 to July 25, 2021, strong Mwera Winds will blow over the country`s water bodies.

In an interview, Director in the Department Jolamu Nkhokwe said all lake users should take necessary caution to avoid loss of life and property.

“Strong Mwera winds are expected to be blowing over Lake Malawi, Lake Malombe, Lake Chirwa, Lake Chiuta and other water bodies in Malawi.

“These strong winds are being caused by a cool and moist airflow pumped by an intense high-pressure system from the Indian Ocean off coast of South Africa,” said Nkhokwe.

The Department is expected to update the nation on the winds this coming Sunday July 25, 2021.
