Energy minister, 2 others granted bail

The Lilongwe Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to Energy Minister Newton Kambala, Aford President Enoch Chihana and President Lazarus Chakwera’s aide Chris Chains Banda.

The court granted bail to the accused on conditions that they produce a cash bond of K200, 000 each and two traceable and reliable sureties bonded at K10 million non-cash each.

In addition, they have also been told to surrender their traveling documents, not interfere with state witnesses and be reporting to ACB offices in Lilongwe once every fortnight on Wednesdays.

Kambala faces three counts of conspirancy to influence a public officer to abuse their office; misuse of public office and alternative count of attempting to influence a public officer.

Chihana is answering two counts of conspiracy to influence abuse of office and attempting to influence a public officer.

Chaima Banda is answering two counts of conspirancy to influence a public officer to abuse office and attempting to influence a public officer.

The three accused pleaded not guilty to all the five charges levelled against them.
