Court frees Lihaco CEO, others

The Lilongwe Senior Resident Magistrate Court has released on bail Chief Executive Officer (CEO) for Lilongwe Handling Company (Lihaco) Alick Kasaila and three others who were arrested on Wednesday on alleged financial management offences.

Kasaila who is being co-accused with the company`s former finance and management officer Eunice Kaipa, Procurement Officer Bright Chilanga and Supplier Frank Mazizi are answering seven counts ranging from abuse of office to contravening public procurement methods.

Granting bail to the accused persons, Senior Resident Magistrate Montfort Misunje ordered the four to pay a cash bond of K100, 000 and one surety each bonded at K500, 000 including surrendering travelling documents and reporting to police once every fortnight.

“It was just a process where they were being informed on why they were detained and the State was asking for further detention so that they conclude investigations.

“The State has prepared some charges but they [accused] didn’t proceed to take plea because I think as I understood they are still finalising the investigations,” said Gilbert Khonyongwa, one of the lawyers representing the accused persons.

Hearing of the trial is scheduled to commence on November 3, 2021.

The four were arrested on Wednesday this week after an investigation by police over alleged financial mismanagement.
