Govt denies interfering MEC’s demarcation exercise

Government has dismissed speculations that it is influencing the ongoing constituency demarcation exercise which is being carried out by the Electoral Commission.

The remarks by Government spokesperson Gospel Kazako comes at a time when some quarters are questioning the processes behind the exercise saying that government is interfering.

“We are a government that believes very much into rule of law and this is what we believe in and when the laws are being used to make decisions, we don’t interfere,” Kazako.

Speaking to Yoneco FM Online, Kazako said government respects the independence of the electoral body and it has no role to play in its electoral affairs.

He said: “Our position as government is that we view the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) as an independent body and you know that it is established by the laws of Malawi.

Whatever decisions that they are making is that they are making those decisions professionally, ethically and of course independently, government has no role in the formulation of the new constituencies.”

The last demarcation exercise was conducted in 1998.
