Teachers fault new recruitment system

Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) has faulted government for the criteria that it intends to use in recruiting primary school teachers in the country.

In a press statement released by the Ministry of Local Government, the ministry in corroboration with Ministry of Education and district councils will start recruiting IPTE 13 primary teachers from December 20 to 23 this year.

According to the statement, the teachers are to undergo an interview before being fully recruited that will be conducted in all district councils in the stated days.

TUM secretary general Charles Kumchenga said they are not pleased with the criteria that government is going to use in recruiting the teachers saying all the teachers who have graduated in training colleges are competent.

Kumchenga also added that TUM is not happy to note that government is planning to employ less primary school teachers.

“The number of teachers that government is to employ shows to be less than the total number of teachers that graduated and are currently staying in homes,” he said.

IPTE 13 teachers have been working as auxiliary teachers in the country schools from January this year.
