Salary delay irks TUM

Auxiliary primary school teachers have complained over the delay by government to provide them with December 2021 salaries.

The development comes as the teachers are waiting for results of the interviews that they underwent in December 2021 in all the district councils in order to be employed.

In an interview with YFM Online, Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) Secretary General, Charles Kumchenga described the situation as worrisome.

“It’s very unfortunate that government has not provided a December 2021 salary which is contrary to the country’s Employment Act,” he said.

Kumchenga said the union will engage the relevant authorities to address the issue.

He also appealed to government to ensure releasing names of successful Initial Teacher Primary Education (IPTE13) teachers to start working in the schools.

“We are appealing with government to speed up the process of finalizing recruitment of IPTE 13 teachers who did their interviews recently through the country’s district councils,” said Kumchenga.

“We have heard that some councils have started releasing names of successful IPTE 13 teachers, however, we know that this has not affected education since these teachers are still working as auxiliary teachers in their previous schools,” said Kumchenga.

Government employed IPTE 13 teachers to work as auxiliary teachers since January 2021.
