Lawmaker questions government’s silence on Chizuma’s audio investigation

Member of Parliament for Thyolo Central, Ben Phiri, has bemoaned government’s failure to arrest rising cases of digital crime.

Phiri cited a recent leakage of phone conversation involving Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) Director General, Martha Chizuma, which recently went viral on social media, saying Malawians are yet to know who was behind the high profile leakage.

Phiri said: “The citizens have to be furnished with a report as to exactly what happened. Where are we? We are all waiting.

“That’s why we are requested the Minister to explain to the House and the nation at large exactly where are we with that matter, because it’s an issue that can’t just be left under the carpet.”

He further said Martha Chizuma, as an individual must also be protected.

Responding to the concern, Minister of Information and Digitalisation, Gospel Kazako, dismissed fears that government is doing nothing on the matter.

“To say that nothing is being done is not very accurate and I think that’s amputating the truth.” He said.

He added that the issues is a security matter and the police are handling it hence he can’t diverge more information.
