Parliament calls for swift action on disaster management

Members of Parliament (MPs) have called upon government to carry out a swift action in addressing devastating impacts of floods causing havoc across the country.

According to the lawmakers, most districts have been negatively impacted by the floods leaving others homeless.
In an interview, one of lawmakers Gerald Kapiseni Phiri of Salima Central said authorities need to act with speed in addressing challenges caused by the floods.

“I thought government should take some extra speed in supporting the people in Salima Central and other areas affected by the disasters.

“It seemed a good number of members were also concerned with the same situation in their respective areas, they only had not time to represent it,” Phiri said.

Responding to call, Leader of the House Richard Chimwendo Banda said government through the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA) is up and running towards ensuring that the said challenges are addressed.

Said Chimwendo Banda: “Just to assure Honourable Members and the country at large because this is not something that happens each and every year, there are some prone districts which we know but this time around we are talking about a number of districts.

And DoDMA has been on the ground doing their best with support from government and the President they are reaching out to almost all affected areas.”

On January 26 2022, President Lazarus Chakwera declared a state of disaster in districts affected by floods and heavy rains.
