Economist calls for airports’ renovation

By Françios Kwatani

Catholic University economics lecturer Edward Masoambeta says the government should upgrade airports to enhance the growth of the aviation industry.

He was reacting to reports that five Airline companies namely; Khama Airline, LakeStar, SimAir, FlyTech Group and Sub-Saharan Airlines have shown interest to operate in Malawi.

Masoambeta said the development will make air transport cheaper as compared to the past as there will be more competition.

He said the development will also ease up the ordering of import goods as access to transportation of such goods will be easily accessible through the airplanes.

However, Masoambeta expressed concern over the state of Kamuzu and Chileka international airports which he said need renovations.

He also expressed the need for face-lifting of hotels to be able to accommodate masses of tourists thereby bringing more currency in the country.
