On Wednesday, the High Court sitting in Mangochi sentenced James Khang’a 71, Sumali Nikisi 45 and Gayesi Kapote 44 to a total of 155 and half years each in prison for being found guilty of three counts of murder, extracting human tissue and trafficking in persons which will be served concurrently.

Commenting on the development, APAM president Young Muhamba said the sentence shows progress on efforts to improve protection of people with albinism in the country.

“This means that the efforts of pushing completion of cases involving violation of rights of people with albinism are bearing fruits,” said Muhamba.

He said this year alone, three cases involving violation of rights of people with albinism have been completed after their engagement with different institutions such as the judiciary to speed up the cases.

“We will keep on pushing so that all the cases that are kept stale to be completed in the country’s courts as soon as possible,” Mahamba said.
