Ombudsman offices risk closure over unpaid rentals

Offices for the Office of the Ombudsman risks being sealed again due to unpaid rentals amounting to K78 million.

Disclosing the development to us, Ombudsman Grace Malera said the accumulated outstanding balance has prompted the landlord to issue the warning of sealing the offices.

She said: “The concerns around the issue of rentals lie in the fact that there is always an accumulated bill, that government does not pay in time.

“Just last year alone, we had the landlord closing our offices for three times, this year they had intended to close fortunately, the Ministry of Lands came to our rescue.”

Malera added that the Office was closed three times last year due to unpaid rentals.

“We are not free from the yoke of the landlord coming and enforcing, maybe even eviction,” said Malera.

YONECO FM understands that government entities that are in rented premises have since been allocated land for construction of their offices.
