ESCOM imparts financial literacy skills to project affected persons

By Françios Kwatani

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (ESCOM) says financial literacy skills are key to ensuring prudent management of compensation payments to communities affected by the Mozambique-Malawi Interconnector project.

ESCOM has conducted financial literacy training workshops in Mwanza, Neno and Balaka districts with the aim of equipping the affected people with financial literacy skills in anticipation of disbursement of compensation payments.

ESCOM’s Public Relations Manager, Kitty Chingota said they noticed that most project affected persons face challenges in managing their compensation payments hence the introduction of the trainings.

“We designed the project to reckon that every beneficiary is not illiterate in terms of handling their compensation money,” Chingota said.

She further added that the programme will impart financial knowledge and information that will prevent misuse of the payments in order for them to make benefits.
