Brace for minibus fares hike – MOAM

By Françios Kwatani

The Minibus Owners Association of Malawi- MOAM has asked government to consider prioritizing railway transport as its main source of transporting fuel into the country in order to reduce cost implications.

MOAM Secretary General Coxley Kamange has said this following MERA’s announcement of an upward adjustment of fuel pump prices effective  June 23, 2022.

“This is a shocking development since last week we were celebrating that government is extending the use of railway transport to transport fuel into the country therefore our expectation was to see maintained fuel prices or even a reduction in the prices,” Kamange said.

Furthermore, Kamange says due to the adjustment Malawians should expect price increase in minibus fares as a strategy to ensure that minibus operators are able to maintain their minibuses in good condition.

“Two months ago we appealed to our members to maintain the prices of minibus fares after MERA first announced an adjustment of fuel pump prices and luckily enough most of them heard our plea but as of now we cannot do otherwise,” Kamange said.
