Chakwera given ultimatum on trimming powers

Center for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives-CDEDI has given president Lazarus Chakwera 14 days to engage the Malawi Law Commission and commence the process of trimming presidential powers as promised during the campaign period.

In letter dated July 4, 2022, CDEDI’s Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa said the talks about ending corruption will remain a political rhetoric unless presidential immunity is stripped off in the constitution of Malawi.

Namiwa has reminded President Chakwera that he was ushered into office on people’s trust that he is going to deliver on flagship campaign promises.

According to CDEDI, the grouping will mobilize Malawians to hold peaceful demonstrations and vigils if the President fails to act on the letter.
