Opposition leader case adjourned to next week

High Court Judge Kenyatta Nyirenda has set Monday next week date for an inter partes hearing of case involving some Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers against appointment of George Chaponda as leader of opposition.

The matter, which resumed on Monday morning in Lilongwe, failed to proceed due to irregularities observed in some of the submissions by the defendants.

According to one of the lawyers representing the lawmakers – Wapona Kita, the claimants would respond to the submissions once sorted out.

“The matter has been adjourned to July 25, 2022 at 9 am. They were some irregularities in the documents which we received from the other side so we asked the court to strike them out.

“But they asked for permission that they should still use them which we didn’t object so now we have got the right to reply, so we needed time so the court has given us this week,” Kita said.

On Monday, the court was expected to continue with hearing on continuation of the injunction.

According to the injunction which was granted on June 28, 2022, the DPP is restrained from implementing its decision of electing Chaponda as Leader of Opposition of the National Assembly.

The order further directed that the status quo that existed before the said direction is being maintained.
