Court to determine Sanjika Palace workers’ injunction August 2

High Court Judge Chimbizgani Kacheche has set August 2 2022 as the date for ruling in a matter which 99 workers from Sanjika Palace are seeking for an injunction restraining government from re-deploying to other government departments.

In May this year, 136 workers were transferred from the state residences across the country a development which they are protesting.

Following the development, 99 employees from Sanjika palace in Blantyre took the matter to court.
Lawyer representing the applicants, Luciano Mickeus, argued that the transfers are unfair and arbitrary as his clients are permanent employees at the state house residences.

He further said the employees were not told reasons for their transfers.

Attorney General, Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda, requested the court to decline the injunction citing among others that the redeployment was within the laws guiding the civil service where the civil servants are subjected to be transferred within the service.

Nyirenda also argued that the case was not properly brought before the High Court after the earlier decision by the Industrial Relations Court on the matter.
He has therefore asked the court to dismiss the application with costs.

The affected workers include gardeners, teachers, housekeepers and hospital attendants.

They have re-deployed to different government institutions such as judiciary headquarters, district councils and city councils.
