PTC staff seeks government’s intervention over salaries

Employees of Peoples Trading Center Limited (PTC) have petitioned government expressing their grievances over what they call gross mismanagement of the company.

The workers, who held a peaceful demonstration this morning in Lilongwe, said ever since the sale of the company to Tafika Holdings Limited (THL) in February this year; they are yet to receive their pension benefits and salary arrears for June and July this year.

Presenting a petition to Lilongwe District Commissioner Lawford Palani, the workers said their only last hope is in government that it will intervene on their grievances.

“We want Tafika Holdings Limited and Press Corporation Limited (PCL) to give us our arrears because they sold our company so they were supposed to give us our money like pension fund.

They were deducting our pension but nor remitting to the pension fund, so they should pay us our money since the time we started working up to now,” lamented Loney Kanjo, one of the concerned workers.

She added that the workers are struggling to make ends meet since PTC shops have been closed.

“We want the minister to intervene by calling PTC, PLC and THL to a roundabout discussion because we have heard that one of them and to back off.

Because the two of them are fighting, we are the ones suffering for instance myself I am yet to pay rentals because I didn’t receive my salary.”

Whilst commending the staff for holding a peaceful demonstration, Lilongwe District Commissioner Lawford Palani has assured the employees that their petition will be delivered to the designated Minister of Labour – Vera Kamtukule.
