CDEDI demands release of allowances’ data for public officers

By Emmanuel Yokonia

The Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has demanded that no further arrests of accountants at the Accountant General’s (AG) department should be made until the Minister of Finance releases allowances data for every public officer including cabinet ministers.

The call follows the arrests of 17 accountants at the AG’s department in connection to the alleged siphoning of K461 million from public coffers.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lilongwe, executive director for CDEDI Sylvester Namiwa also asked the fiscal police to arrest all controlling officers who approved all those unjustified allowances that led to the arrests of some civil servants.

Namiwa also called on the Secretary to Treasury and the Accountant General (AG) to resign to create a space for investigations.
