Former IG’s testimony enters second day

Former Inspector General of the Malawi Police Service Lexten Kachama on Wednesday told High Court Judge Annabel Mtalimanja that he did not confirm some contents of the K2.7 billion food rations procurement deal.

Kachama, who started rendering his testimony on Tuesday, told the court that the stores staff are the one’s mandated to verify the procured items in relation to the deal.

The former police boss is testifying in a case involving businessperson Zameer Karim alongside police officer – senior superintendent Grant Kachingwe who are answering six counts of theft, conspiracy to use public office for one’s advantage, money laundering and forgery in relation to a K2.7 food rations deal involving Karim’s company – Pioneer Investments.

“So far so good, like I said the State is still providing evidence through the former IG, they haven’t yet finished, let me not rush to say things now that later on I may not be able to defend or justify,” said Madalitso Kausi, one of the defence lawyers.

Documents which Kachama rendered in court on Wednesday show that for each invoice number there were two different invoices that were made.

The invoices carried the same number and different amounts including different dates.

Hearing of the matter is expected to continue on Thursday morning.
