Chakwera calls for unity among tribes

By Timothy Peter

President Lazarus Chakwera has called for continued unity among the Chewa tribe and other cultural groupings in the country and the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region in a bid to enhance socio-economic development.

Chakwera made the call on Saturday at Mkaika in Zambia during this year’s Kulamba Ceremony, a cultural event for the Chewa people of Malawi, Zambia and Mozambique.

In his words he said his administration is committed to champion co-existence among people of different cultures and ensures there is no favouritism in recruitment of people into public service and when awarding contracts for public projects

The Malawi leader further has hailed the ceremony saying it promotes regional unity by bringing together Chewas from Malawi, Mozambique and Zambia.

On his part Chewa chief, Kalonga Gawaundi, commended the people for honoring the ceremony after a two years break due to the covid-19 pandemic.

He however, has urged the leaders of the three countries to put in place effective mechanisms that will help to end gender based violence and promote girl child education.
