Karonga District Council has suspended eating in social gatherings in order to prevent further spread of the cholera outbreak.

A letter that the council has issued signed by the district’s Commissioner Paul Kalilombe says gatherings including weddings, funeral ceremonies and religious events create a favourable ground for spread of the disease hence the suspension.

The council has also urged all people in the district to adhere to other cholera prevention measures that the Ministry of Health is also encouraging which include drinking safe water or treated water, proper use of latrines washing hands with soap, practicing food hygiene among others.

Karonga district has registered total of 71 cholera cases and four deaths.
