Science For All to penetrate SADC region

As a way of motivating learners to take interest in pursuing science careers the Malawi Liverpool Wellcome Trust hosted a Science For All (Sci4O) showcase and quiz on Friday.

During the showcase, learners from Stella Maris and Mfera Secondary schools had different experiments which included generating electricity from beans.

Sci4O lead Dr Kondwani Jambo indicated that the initiative is helping to build the next generation of researchers in Malawi and has plans to expand it further.

“The fruits that this initiative is bearing are very promising and we would like for it to be a regional one I’m thinking this could work in the Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) region,” Jambo said.

Jambo also indicated that a book on Sci4O will be launched soon where success stories on how some scientists came to being and lessons learned over the years.

Additionally, Jambo mentioned of the innovation challenge where learners will be given materials to develop an innovative product and MLW will support further ideas that are promising.

Meanwhile,a learner from Stella Maris Secondary School Siphokazi Kuyewawa has described the Sci4O initiative as a motivating platform since her goal is to become a cardiologist.

“Most of the things mainly science subjects that we have learned from school we’ve learned them theoretically and when we come here we practice them and this will help us to apply in different science subjects,” Kuyewawa said.
