Fuel crisis refuses to settle

Fuel shortage has reached crisis levels in various parts of the country as many service stations usually do not have enough supply.

The situation is disrupting businesses and movement of motorists, with petrol being the most sought-after commodity.

A spot check by YFM online conducted in the old Capital City, Zomba, and the commercial city of Blantyre, chaos and long queues have been the order of the day in most filling stations.

The few filling stations that have fuel have had long lines of motorists looking for the commodity especially petrol which resulted into chaos, as motorists and motorcycle taxi operators scramble for the commodity.

In addition, the long queues have also caused traffic jams along the roads.

And on the other hand, the crisis has affected a number of businesses and has left most commuters stranded as most minibuses are not operating normally.

According to one the minibus drivers who spoke to YFM online, Lazalo Chipeta, the situation has affected him as he depends on the minibus business for a living.

The country has been faced with fuel shortage for about two months now and recently President Lazarus Chakwera said that the crisis was due to lack of forex in the country.

In the previous week Reserve Bank of Malawi (RBM) governor, Wilson Banda, said government is lining up instruments to ensure the country has enough fuel.

Meanwhile, authorities are yet to provide information on exactly when the shortage of fuel will be addressed.
