Council urged to prepare for flood season

The Department of Climate Change and Meteological Services has urged Zomba District Council authorities to start preparing for the possibility of flooding.

Chief Meteorologist Charles Vanya made the appeal when presenting a scaled forecast report to Zomba District Council for the 2022/2023 rain season.

Vanya said although the district is expected to receive good rains, some areas will receive excess rains that will lead to flooding.

” My appeal is to the council to be alert on the forecast,” Vanya said while adding that the eastern part of the district may also experience dry spells in the season.

Vanya said the report is crucial because it will help famers in the district to choose the right crop to plant in the season as well.

Zomba district commissioner Francis Gwedemula said the report will help the council to start preparing for the season where among others it will organize relief items to all the families that could be affected by disasters.

“The report will help us to start the sensitization meetings which will prepare us to start the sensitization to communities in the district on the rainfall forecast for this season,” said Gwedemula.
