Kamuzu institute thieves arrested, items worthy millions recovered

Police in Lilongwe have arrested are six suspects in connection to theft of building materials at the new state-of-the art Aquatic Sports Complex at Kamuzu Institute for Sports.

In a statement released on Tuesday, police say the K6 million worth of materials including six circulation water pumps, 78 cartons of tiles, bags of cement, 30 buckets of paint, were stolen on December 24, 2022.

The suspects have been identified as Naphtali Kasisa, 29, Lazarus Chakhadza, 34, Triza Samson, 23, Levison Nkhoma, 29, Chosaziwa Khumalo, 48, and Umali Damison, 35.

The statement said the guards who were assigned to provide security at the warehouse containing the items connived with a former stores clerk identified as Damison to allow a motorcycle registration number BL 8052 and Isuzu 3 tonner into the premises to transport the stolen items.

Police have recovered some items such as 28 buckets of paint, 34 cartons of tiles, 5 circulation water pumps and impounded the truck that was used.

The suspects will appear before court to answer charges leveled against them.

Investigations are still under way to apprehend other accomplices who are at large and recover the remaining items.
