Chakwera told to cut travels, subsidise maize price

Member of Parliament for Zomba Malosa Constituency, Grace Kwelepeta has asked President Lazarus Chakwera to cut what she calls “resource draining travels” and divert those resources towards subsidising maize price currently selling at K600 per kilogram at Agricultural Development and Marketing Corporation (ADMARC) markets.
Kwelepeta, made the call on Tuesday at Domasi ADMARC selling point when a group of journalists were touring some of the ADMARC markets to appreciate the situation situation.
“I thank government for making available maize at Domasi ADMARC which will enable people from this area to access it easily, however, I ask the President to consider reducing his travels and subsidise the maize because K600 per kilogram is too much for a local person to afford,” she said.
Georgina Nkhwazi from Songani said she would be happy if the maize be reduced to at least K15, 000. 00 as this will be affordable to everyone.
“You can see for yourself that people can’t even afford to buy more than 5 kgs, the economy is not stable and reducing the maize prices would be a steppingstone towards a developed Malawi,” she said.
Malosa ADMARC is the only depot in Zomba which has received the maize so far.
