HRDC calls for review of law on discontinuance of cases

The Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is proposing for the review of the Criminal Procedure and Evidence Code which mandates the Director of Public Prosecution (DPP) to discontinue some cases for particular reasons, saying that the law might be abused for political reasons.

Vice chairperson for the grouping, Micheal Kaiyatsa, was reacting to the High Court’s determination to discontinue the corruption case involving vice president Saulos Chilima.

Kaiyatsa told YFM that the decision might have been politically motivated.

He added that the decision has raised a lot of concerns among stakeholders, a development he said might also result in loss of donor confidence in the fight against corruption.
