Chakwera commits to improving farmers’ livelihoods

President Lazarus Chakwera has reiterated government’s unwavering commitment to improving the livelihoods of farmers.

Chakwera was speaking on Friday at Kamuzu Palace in Lilongwe during a meeting with the Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) leaders and members where he underscored the significance of farmers adopting proper storage and preservation practices to avoid instances of food shortages in the country.

The president said farmers need to collaborate with government across all agriculture sectors to enhance the profitability and productivity of the industry.

He added that farmers should also improve production and transition from subsistence farming to large-scale, modern equipment-assisted farming for increased productivity which is in line with the Malawi 2063 Vision.

Farmers Union of Malawi (FUM) president, Maness Nkhata has appealed to President Chakwera to ensure equitable distribution of resources to facilitate nationwide farmer access to initiatives such as the Agriculture Commercialization Project among others.
