CCJP endorses planned lawyer’s protests over judicial reforms bills

The Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace (CCJP) has endorsed the planned demonstrations by the Malawi Law Society slated for September 12, 2024, to force government to expedite the enactment of the judicial reforms’ bills.

Boniface Chibwana, CCJP National Coordinator through a media statement said there is a need to urgently ratify the bills as it is crucial in addressing corruption, partisanship and impunity within the judicial systems.

The statement referred to the pastoral letter of the catholic bishops of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi of this year titled the sad Malawi, which raised concerns regarding the integrity of the judiciary.

Among others the pastoral letter highlighted that the judiciary has abandoned its integrity and embroiled itself in corruption and partisanship which affects quality service delivery.

The commission therefore underscored the urgency for judicial reforms which are crucial in addressing corruption, partisanship and impunity within the judicial systems.

The statement has further stated that the delay by government machinery in enacting the bills is frustrating efforts to put in place a law that properly regulates the judiciary and that can help to restore public trust in the country’s judicial system.

It adds that the reforms bills are essential to fostering judicial accountability, transparency and integrity which is the foundation for a just and corrupt free society.
