MACRA warns against internet abuse

The Malawi Communication Regulatory Authority – MACRA has appealed to Malawians to be cautious when using information on social media during the election period.

The warning comes amid concerns over the spread of fake news on various social media platforms during this election period.

In a statement released on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s polls and signed by the body’s Director General Godfrey Itaye, said it realizes the importance of social media in filling the information gaps but has warned the country’s citizenry to share information that is beneficial to the country.

However, the county’s communication regulator body said it is working with stakeholders to find ways of countering the spread of fake news which is a global challenge.

Therefore Itaye in the statement said, users of social media platforms should be vigilant by verifying sources of news before spreading it further to ensure peaceful and credible elections.
