School children at risk in Zomba

By Agatha Namphimba

Over 1674 students at Thabwani primary school in Namiwawa Education Zone in Zomba district are at risk of contracting water borne diseases due to lack of toilets at the school.

The six toilets which they were using collapsed in January due to floods.

Headteacher for Thabwani primary school John Gabi Nampukuta said the matter was reported to the district education office but up to now nothing has been done.

“The district education manager told me that I should wait.

“My worry is that we are close to the rainy season and pupils are at a high risk of contracting water borne diseases,” said Nampukuta.

On his part District Education Manager (DEM) for Zomba Rural Charles Sakwata said he cannot comment on the matter.

Sakwata however wondered how authorities at the school are using funds from government and other funds at the school.
