Govt speaks on religious dressing in schools

Government says it has taken a nondiscriminatory approach towards religious dressing in schools.

This was highlighted in a statement signed by the Secretary for Education Justin Saidi.

The statement says no child should be excluded from school for dressing according to their religious rights, unless the type of dress offends public morality or school discipline

Recently the ministry received concerns from faith based organizations about the dress code in schools.

It has therefore said the matter will be discussed with the Public Affairs Committee PAC during school holiday.

The ministry said it recognizes the role faith based organisations play in constructing schools that improve education in Malawi.

The schools are handed to the ministry and run by government which facilitates the deployment and payment of teacher’s salaries as well as maintenance of infrastructure.

Head teachers and principals have since been advised to adhere to the contents of the letter.
