Two arrested on human trafficking charges

Police in Zomba are keeping in custody two men for allegedly trafficking over five people to Lilongwe after duping them some cash.

Deputy Public Relations Officer for Zomba Police Patrick Maseko has confirmed to YFM that the two Idrissa Kumtendere 25 and Gerald Muonjeza 24 were arrested in Lilongwe following a complaint from one of the victim.

According to the victim, together with her friends were asked them to join the suspects to Lilongwe after promising them to find them jobs. She said the suspects asked them to pay not less than K40, 000 each, claiming that it was meant for processing employment deals.

After seeing that the suspects kept on changing tunes, the victim reported the matter to Zomba police who did investigations that led to the arrest of the two on November 18 2019 in Lilongwe, and rescued other five victims who were dumped in a rented house in the Capital City who among them two were girls.

The two have since been charged with the offence of trafficking in person which is contrary to Section 14 of Trafficking in Persons Act, and theft by trick contrary to Section 321 of the Penal Code. They have since started appearing before the court.

Idrissa hails from Bwana Village, Traditional Authority Kumtumanje while Muonjeza hails from Samani Village, Traditional Authority Mkagula both from Zomba district.

Meanwhile, police in the district has appealed to the public to report to police any suspected tricksters.
