Malawi’s president Peter Mutharika says the Human Rights Defenders Coalition (HRDC) is slowly degenerating into a terrorist organization.

In his New Year’s address, Mutharika said HRDC is a political organization that enjoy creating terror among Malawians.

“HRDC is by its actions a political organization,” Mutharika said.

The outspoken human rights body, has been organizing demonstrations across the country in order to force embattled Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) chairperson Jane Ansah to resign over the manner in which the May 21 elections were conducted.

But reacting to Mutharika`s sentiments, HRDC vice chairperson Gift Trapence told YFM that the coalition is not surprised by the accusations.

Trapence has since vowed that HRDC will not be intimidated by what he called the ‘fight against infringement of rights of people in the country’.
