The Association of Persons with Albinism (Apam) has accused council officials of delaying the construction of houses for persons with albinism in the country.

K400 million was set aside for the construction of houses for persons with albinism in the 2021/2022 national budget to enhance their safety and security.

Malawi has over 134,000 people with albinism, according to the 2018 Population and Housing Census.

Speaking to YONECO FM in an interview, Apam president, Young Muhamba, said so far only two districts have commenced construction works.

Muhamba said committees in the districts councils are the one’s delaying the project despite receiving funds.

“The money is there at district level, however, only two districts have started the construction,” he said.

However, Muhamba, expressed hope that the construction works will be finished by the end of March next year as all the contractors have been identified.
