The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has promoted over 20,000 primary and secondary school teachers.

Principal Secretary for the ministry, Justin Saidi said a total of 20,210 teachers have been promoted to various grades.

Saidi said 15,491 primary and 4,719 secondary school teachers have been promoted to K, J, I, H, G and F grades. He said the promotions are effective April 2, 2019.

Teachers Union of Malawi general secretary Charles Kumchenga expressed satisfaction with the development.

“Last time government announced that it is going to promote about 14,000 teachers and through negotiations we have been having it has increased the number to 20,000 so it is a good development,” he said.

Kumchenga however asked the government to continue with the initiative since there are more teacher’s waiting to be promoted.

“They should also promote another group of teachers next year or this year in August or September. I think by doing that teachers will not cry for promotions,” he said.
