Mulanje police decry rise in child marriages

Police in Mulanje have bemoaned the rising cases of child marriages in the district.

This follows a report that at least 46 child marriages have been reported in the district in just one month.

Speaking to YFM, Mulanje Police Spokesperson Gresham Ngwira attributed the increased cases to parental negligence and cheer lack of humanity by the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, one of the stakeholders involved in dealing with child marriage issues in Mulanje, Youth Net and Counselling (YONECO) has attributed the increase to the closure of schools due to covid-19.

YONECO project’s officer for Mulanje, Ellen Olivia Mvula has revealed that they have put in place new interventions to deal with the malpractice.

From January to June this year, at least 100 cases of child marriage have been recorded in Mulanje district only.

Apart from child marriage cases, cases of rape and defilement are on the increase in Mulanje district.
