MRA detains Mukhito’s luxury cars

Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) has confiscated seven luxury cars belonging to former Chief of Staff of State Residences Peter Mukhito for suspected tax evasion.

MRA head of corporate affairs Steven Kapoloma said in a statement on Thursday that the vehicles have been detained pending production of customs clearance documentation.

“Following a tip, the Malawi Revenue Authority (MRA) on Thursday, 30th July, 2020, conducted a search at Mr. Peter Mukhito’s residence in Lilongwe for suspected tax evasion involving motor vehicles,” the statement reads.

According to Kapoloma, the vehicles include a Toyota Land Cruiser (VX8) Registration number BW 6060, a Range Rover with no number plate, a Toyota Land Cruiser (VX8) with no number plate, a Mercedes Benz registration number CPM 2, a VW Passat registration number CP 7074, a Toyota Fortuner registration number MH 950 and a Bentry registration number FW16LS-GP.

Mukhito was arrested earlier this week in connection with illegal cement importation deals worth K5 billion using former President Peter Mutharika’s Taxpayer Identification Number (TPIN).
