Chakwera urges teachers to suspend strike

As teachers continue boycotting work in demand for Covid-19 risk allowances, State House says President Lazarus Chakwera finds the strike unjustifiable.

Speaking on Monday at the State House weekly brief, Presidential Press Secretary Brian Banda said science which is used to determine those at high risk of Covid-19 does not recognize teachers as a more risk profession.

Banda said President Chakwera is dismayed with the strike considering that students have been at home for more than six weeks now.

Banda said Chakwera is expecting teachers to understand the recommendations of science and call off their strike for the benefit of students.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Education released a statement informing teachers that the ministry has agreed with the teachers mother body, Teachers Union of Malawi (TUM) to call of the strike but the announcement was shot down by TUM which denied to have reached a compromise with the ministry as alleged in the communication.

As the strike entered second week on Monday, leaners from some schools held demonstrations protesting the strike by their teachers.
