Chief Justice counsels newly elected MPs to serve electorate

Chief Justice Andrew Nyirenda has advised the newly elected lawmakers in the March 30, 2021 by-elections to fully serve the nation by not squandering the opportunity entrusted to them by the electorate. 

Justice Nyirenda said this at Parliament Building in Lilongwe this morning during a swearing in ceremony of the elected Members of Parliament from seven constituencies.

“At this point let me implore you to always recall that as Parliamentarians you are role models in our society. That responsibility must be reflected in your conduct in this August House as well as beyond. You will be expected to be selfless and empathetic.

“You will be expected to ensure that your representative capacity carries the voices and concerns of the voting public that ushered you into this House,” said Justice Nyirenda.

The legislators, have also been advised to have a high level of commitment and upholding the decorum of the House.

Speaking to Yoneco FM, Kafandikhale Mandevana, newly elected lawmaker for Nsanje Central Constituency said he will try his best towards facilitating development in his constituency.

“As I promised during company that I will facilitate all the development in my Constituency and I will fulfill that promise, there is a lot to be done in the Constituency, and also I will work here in Parliament according to the Standing Orders,” said Mandevana.

On his part Lilongwe Msinja South Constituency legislator Francis Belekanyama said he will ensure that there is improved working relationship between him and ward councilors aiming at developing the constituency.

“When we talk about best relationship that a councilor and MP, Msinja South Constituency is the best, I think I will have the best relationship with them in order to bring the best to the people of Msinja South Constituency,” said Belekanyama.

The Members of Parliament who took an oath of allegiance and office in accordance with Section 52 of the Republican Constitution include that from Karonga North West, Ntchisi North, Zomba Changalume, Chikwawa East and Nsanje North Constituencies.
