Government upbeat as covid-19 cases surge

The Ministry of Health says it is well capacitated to contain a third wave of the coronavirus pandemic.

Malawi is facing a surge in COVID-19 cases, with an infection rate of 24.5%.

Recent statistics from the Ministry of Health released on Sunday show that in the previous 24 hours, Malawi registered 240 new COVID-19 cases and eight deaths.

Ministry of Health spokesperson Adrian Chikumbe said despite poor infrastructure, the ministry has planned to recruit and train additional health workers.

Chikumbe said the ministry has also secured 8000 gas cylinders which will also carter for district hospitals.

“The ministry has also increased capacity for COVID-19 tests in district hospitals and health centers,” he said.

Minister of Health Khumbize Kandodo Chiponda announced on Saturday that Malawi will receive 192,000 doses of AstraZeneca vaccine on July 15, 2021.
