MCTU set for anti-labour bill demos

The campaign against the newly passed Labour Relations Amendment bill continues to gain momentum as now the Malawi Congress of Trade Unions (MCTU) says it will Thursday take to the streets protesting against the bill.

According MCTU President Charles Kumchenga, the countrywide protests are aimed at asking President Lazarus Chakwera not to assent to the bill.

“We wanted to request the President not to approve this Bill because we have seen that the Bill has been passed in Parliament and the only remaining person who has to approve or disapprove is the President.

“So, it’s more less like requesting him not to approve that Bill so, that is the aim of the demonstration and on the other side is just a sign that we not happy with the contents of the Bill,” said Kumchenga.

He also disclosed that MCTU will be seeking for court’s intervention on the matter.

“Obviously, it is there that plan is there, you remember last time we clearly indicated that before going to court we wanted to meet the people at Parliament, we did that.

“But unfortunately, the Bill was passed last week so this time we are going to take the legal matter or the legal channel then on the other side we are going to take the demonstrational side,” he said.

The bill among others, will give powers to employers to deduct wages from their employees who go strike for more than 3 days.
