Attorney General asked to fight K2tn claims

By Esnart Chingwalu

Centre for Democracy and Economic Development Initiatives (CDEDI) has urged the office of the Attorney General to fight compensation claims by some companies emerging from legal compliance anomalies of contracts.

A statement signed by CDEDI Executive Director Sylvester Namiwa says reports that some companies are demanding K2 trillion are stressful and Attorney General has to save the taxpayer’s money.

The statement has quoted the Attorney General Thabo Chakaka Nyirenda who said that for instance one company is claiming K250 billion in compensation.

According to CDEDI, the funds can instead be used on other essential matters such as the Affordable Inputs Programme which can benefit over 3.5 million people.

CDEDI has further asked the Attorney General to investigate if the contracts of claimants were genuine and if laws were followed in the tendering process, among others.

The grouping has also asked the Attorney General to help in removing firms and companies connected to Tonse Alliance major partner, Malawi Congress Party.

CDEDI has since asked Minister of Finance Felix Mlusu and Chairperson of Public Accounts Committee of Parliament, Shadreck Namalomba to intervene on the matter.
