Malawi making strides in wildlife conservation

As Malawi is commemorating World Wildlife Day on March 3, 2022, the Department of National Parks and Wildlife has indicated that the pangolin remains an endangered specie.

Speaking to Yoneco FM online, director in the department Brighton Kumchedwa said there has however been a decline in ivory trafficking and an increase in animals in protected areas in the past five years.

“Compared to the previous years we would say that some things have improved wildlife crimes have significantly reduced,” Kumchedwa said.

“This year, the day is being commemorated under the theme ‘Recovering key species for ecosystem restoration’.

Commenting on the theme for the year, environmental activist Matthews Malata said the country should continue to strengthen community engagement and ensure that endangered species are protected and restored in order to maintain a healthy biodiversity.
