Power supplier Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) says it will loose K12 billion in revenue in 12 months following the malfunctioning of Kapichira Hydroelectric Power Station.

Escom Chief Executive Officer Kamkwamba Kumwenda has told Yoneco FM that this is largely due to devastating impacts caused by the recent Tropical Cyclone Ana.

“As a country I think we should expect megawatts back within 12 months because it’s  a major project,” Kumwenda said.

“It involves some specialists coming in to assess the damage and then after 12 months we must have power back, and within one year, Escom will lose K12 billion.”

Kumwenda however expressed optimism that both the Escom and Egenco are tirelessly working on a temporary solution to minimize the power outage challenge.

He said: “What will happen is maybe within 12 months we are going to have a temporary solution, but the last solution will take about a year or so.”

“But we will  be working together with Egenco and the World Bank, the sourcing of funds I think will be done by World Bank.”

Kapichira Hydro Power Plant was adding 129.6 megawatts of power to the national grid.
