Former president Peter Mutharika, who is also the leader of the main opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), has accused the party’s General Secretary Grezelda Jeffrey and vice president for the Southern Region, Kondwani Nankhumwa, of indiscipline.
The accusation comes following a rally which the two officials held at Mgona ground in Lilongwe on May 1 2022 which according to Mutharika was not approved by the party.
The rally by Jeffrey and Nankhumwa was held just a day after the party’s vice president for the Central Region, Zeria Chakale, presided another rally at the same venue a development which analysts have described as a clear indication of divisions in the party.
A press statement issued by Mutharika, said: “Ms Grezelder Jeffrey never consulted the party and its leadership to seek approval for the rally that was conducted on 1st May 2022, presided over by Honourable Nankhumwa.
“DPP is a party of democrats, order, discipline and respect of its constitution. What Ms. Grezelder Geffrey and Honourable Kondwani Nankhumwa did was out of order and an act of indiscipline and disloyalty.
Mutharika has therefore warned that any office bearer or member of the DPP who disrespects the party’s Constitution and its leadership will be dealt with sternly, if they organise or participate in activities that perpetuate disunity in the party.
“As president of the party, I do not condone any acts of indiscipline or disorder,” said Mutharika.
In the statement, Mutharika has backed the Saturday’s rally which was conducted by Chakale saying she consulted the party and its leadership, consequently got an approval from the DPP Central Region Committee.
