Court grants bail to anti-Chizuma vigils’ leaders

The Nkukula Senior Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dowa has released on bail leaders of a grouping dubbed M’badwa Zokhudziwa who recently led anti-Martha Chizuma vigils in Lilongwe.

According to the State, the leaders; Redson Munlo, Agape Khombe and other three demonstrators including a form two student are being accused of a conduct likely to cause breach of peace after they tried to seal ACB offices on Thursday.

Making his bail ruling, Magistrate Montfort Misinje ordered all the five accused persons to pay a cash bond of K25, 000 each, be reporting to Central West Police once every fortnight.

The court has also the five to produce traceable and reliable sureties bonded at K100, 000 non-cash each and not travel outside Lilongwe without Police consent as their bail conditions.

“We are very happy that we are out of bail. We can’t talk much about what is in court.

Shortly we will be preparing for a press briefing where we will talk a number of issues and the way forward how we are going to proceed,” said Munlo upon his release.

Earlier, the State through Police Regional Prosecution Inspector Dalireni Kalanguka pleaded with the court to detain the suspects for further three day so that they wind up their investigations.

However, Munlo told the court through his lawyer that he was assaulted by police whilst in custody and that he needs to seek medical attention.

He said: “In fact I am still in pain haven’t taken any medicine I just want to go to my doctor and see what is really wrong because still I am feeling pain in my body.”

Hearing of the trial has since been adjourned to next week Friday.
