Adult education goes beyond literacy – DVV International

An international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) – DVV International has challenged the country’s media on the importance of investigating and writing news stories about adult learning and education.

DVV International Regional Director for Southern Africa David Harrington said this on Monday in Lilongwe during handover ceremony of state-of-the-art laptop computers to two journalists who won awards under the MISA Malawi’s Adult Learning and Education (LEA) category.

According to Harrington, adult education goes beyond literacy and the country can development in many aspects if much attention is considered in the sector.

He said: “Adult education is much more than just literacy and people want to learn things that they can use in their lives. They want to learn about agriculture and health and anything that can help them to improve their lives.

“And it’s great to see the members of the media now are starting to write adult education as a much broader, multi sectoral thing, there is actually adult education taking place in every sector.”

Whilst applauding DVV International for sponsoring the awards, MISA Malawi Programme Officer Moses Chitsulo said journalists will remain committed towards ensuring that adult education is promoted at all levels.

Said Chitsulo: “As MISA Malawi we are very delighted to be part of this journey of promoting adult education because for people to participate in the development of this country they need some kind of education either financial literary or any other kind of knowledge that they need to do everything.”

On his part, one of the awardees Clement Chinoko of Nation Publications Limited (NPL) has commended DVV International for recognition.

“I would like to thank DVV International for the award and also MISA Malawi, we know that MISA awards cannot exist if sponsors are not there so we thank DVV for being there and our commitment as media is that we should continue reporting about adult learning and education,” Chinoko said.

Apart from Chinoko, the Organisation has also awarded Georgia Chirombo of MIJ FM Radio a laptop.

DVV International, which started its operations in the country in 2017, has been sponsoring the MISA Malawi category since 2020.
