Government to recruit girl role models

Government says it will recruit Form Four girls to act as role models in primary schools.

According to Principal Secretary in the Ministry of Education Chikondano Mussa the project, which is being implemented under the Malawi Education Reform Programme, aims at motivating girls in rural settings.

She said: “We want to recruit girls to go in some of the rural schools and help out with managing of large classes and also just to motivate the girl learners in the villages, help with play outside, things like that.”

Musa added that the recruited girls will also be acting as assistant teachers in targeted primary schools.

“We want to increase role modelling, presence of girls in schools to act as role models but also to help with classroom work,” Mussa said.

The Project is being funded by the World Bank Group to the tune of K150 million and the biggest chunk is going towards construction of additional 10, 900 classrooms in the existing schools.

Musa also disclosed that the incentive money is earmarked for construction of teachers’ house in rural areas.
